Our Top Picks For August 2024: Parenting Bloggers

Greetings fellow parents!

It’s that time of the month again when we list our favourite parenting bloggers.

Here, you’ll find our top picks offering the most down-to-earth advice, product recommendations, and moral support for exhausted parents.

Don’t worry, though: we’re still applying our customary high standards. Every mummy, daddy, or parenting blogger in this listicle is worth their weight in gold (if not more!)

So, are you raring to go? I certainly am!

Your Modern Family

Top of our list is the one-and-only Becky Mansfield, creator of the Your Modern Family Blog. She wants to help parents and their children live authentic, joyful and loving lives.

Becky’s popularity comes from her sheer experience. She’s a teacher, wife, mother, and child development therapist all rolled into one – talk about a high-achiever! As such, she communicates with her audience on multiple levels, providing them with valuable information on almost every aspect of parenting.

I like Becky’s family stories – personal anecdotes from her life as a mother and wife. However, she also provides oodles of motherhood advice, and even commentaries on building a successful marriage.

Nurture And Thrive

Dr. Ashley Soderlund is the brainiest person in the parenting blogging space. As the founder of Nurture and Thrive, she has a PhD in developmental psychology, letting her provide her followers with insights they simply can’t get anywhere else.

Ashley’s mission is to broadcast that good parenting mixes evidence-based knowledge and instinctual understanding. In plain English, she believes parents should read books about raising children and be themselves.

I like Nurture and Thrive’s content on emotional regulation the most. Here, Ashley talks readers through techniques they can use to help their kids deal with the stresses and strains of daily life. She also covers other aspects of parenting, including child development insights, how to be more empathetic with kids, and what parents can do to be more mindful in the home.

Scary Mommy

Jill Smokler is the proprietor of Scary Mommy, one of the most influential parenting blogs on the web. With more than 2.6 million followers on Instagram, she’s a titan of her industry.

Scary Mommy has a slightly different emphasis from the blogs covered so far. It’s all about girl power and celebrating everyone’s journey, including married, single, working, and LGBTQ+ mums.

I like Scary Mommy because of how darn personal it gets. It doesn’t try to sugar-coat anything. (Perhaps, that’s why it’s been so wildly successful?)

On the site, you can find advice about health and wellness for busy mums, including how to shoehorn exercise into a busy schedule and make quick, nourishing meals. You will also find content on the tribulations of pregnancy and birth.

But most importantly, there’s a community. You can connect with other mums and get their advice on dealing with whatever situation you find yourself in.

Mum In The Madhouse

Do you ever feel like family life is complete chaos? Well, you’ll love Jen Walshaw’s Mum in the Madhouse blog. It’s for frazzled parents everywhere!

Jen’s purpose is to use her blog to celebrate the joys of parenting. As a proud northerner, she believes in values like diversity, body neutrality, and just getting on with the job.

The Madhouse blog is a smorgasbord of parenting content delights. I like Jen’s concept of portraying realistic images of mothers and families without all the filters and editing. She’s also excellent in the creative space, offering all sorts of ideas that you can include in your family life as a parent (like games and digital tools to keep kids entertained).

In summary, you must check out Mum in The Madhouse if you are over 40. It’s essential reading!

Fatherly

Fatherly got started in 2015 and soon developed into an internet sensation. The blog covers numerous issues from parenting advice to product reviews for busy dads.

Fatherly’s primary appeal is its strong sense of community. It brings dads together and encourages them to share their experiences. For many site users, it is one of the only outlets they have to vent!

Empowering men to raise healthy children is at the core of what Fatherly does. The blog provides dads with hard-won parenting advice to enable their offspring to develop into happy and prosocial children who excel in every stage of life.

But it’s not all super serious. The site also hosts funny content to keep fathers’ lives amusing.

Parents With Confidence

Do you feel confident parenting your kids? If not, you’re not alone. But fortunately, superstar blogger, Angela Pruess, creator of Parents with Confidence, is riding to the rescue. She believes every parent has the power to create environments for their children and foster emotional health and resilience.

Angela is also a smart cookie. She has over 15 years of clinical family therapy experience under her belt, and a further five years as an online parenting coach. People love her because of her ability to draw on her clinical background and personal experience as a parent of three (with two special needs children). Her blog includes articles on resilience, coping strategies, emotional development, and mental health – so pretty much everything. The core of her message is that parents should nurture their confidence while raising children. Yes, it’s challenging, but it’s so much more manageable with proper techniques.

Pregnant Chicken

Yes, it’s true: Amy Morrison is the Pregnant Chicken. And she’s determined to create the best resource for expecting mothers on the internet (we think she’s already there!)

Her core philosophy is that parents should be excited about the arrival of their baby. While she recognises that parenthood is uncertain, she also believes mums and dads can plot clear courses forward if they have the right advice.

I like the humour and relatability of the blog. It’s serious when it needs to be, but Amy and the crew never shy away from a joke.

I also like the extensive coverage of baby gear. It’s so useful when waiting for a newborn to arrive and you have no idea what to buy!

In The Playroom

What goes on in the playroom? Fortunately, Anna Marikar seems to know. She’s the creator of the In The Playroom blog, a veritable resource for parents looking for practical advice and instructions.

In The Playroom’s content focuses mainly on inspiring parents with simple and fun educational activities they can do with their kids. The idea is to foster a sense of teamwork in the home instead of having children hooked on their smartphones all day. Arts and crafts activities are simple and easy to follow, with plenty of lifestyle advice thrown into the mix.

I like the toy reviews the most. These help me figure out what to buy for my kids (a challenging task!)

I also like the giveaways. There always seems to be something to win on the blog, encouraging me to return for more.

Blended Life

Julie Stolz is the founder of Blended Life blog, a resource on the complexities of blended families. Her mission is to share the lessons she’s learned to create a community where people from all walks of life can connect and share their successes and challenges.

Julie’s personal reflections are the main reason for reading the blog. I love how in-depth she goes and her candid honesty when discussing her parenting mistakes. She’s not afraid to share all the juicy details with her followers so they can avoid the same mishaps!

The rest of the content on the site is practical guidance for blended family living. Her content around relationship-building and co-parenting is second to none.

Imperfect Families

Despite what you see on social media, no one’s family is perfect. Everyone has problems. But that’s why Imperfect Families is so inspiring.

The blog is the brainchild of parent coach Nicole Schwarz. Her mission is to help overwhelmed, stressed, and confused parents build confidence and connect with their kids more.

Her core thesis is that parents should move beyond the notion that their job is mere “survival.” She believes mums and dads owe it to themselves and their children to rise above the stress and tiredness so they can enjoy life.

I like how real Nicole is on her blog. She’s someone you can tell has been through the fire and come out the other side to tell the tale. But despite this, she’s also compassionate, teaching parents how to avoid bad advice and keep the home peaceful (good on her, I say!)

Rookie Moms

Do you ever feel like you’re out of your depth as a parent? If so, Rookie Moms by Amber Myers Mamian could be the blog you need this August. It provides support to parents experiencing episodes of imposter syndrome.

Rookie Moms’ mission is to provide parents with the guidance they need to raise children. However, it doesn’t decree what mums and dads should do from on-high. Instead, it adopts a sisterly tone, nudging you in the right direction.

This emphasis comes from Amber’s experience. She’s the mother of six children (through birth and adoption) and knows what it takes to raise a family, run a business, and do everything else. As such, she’s forgiving, not judgy.

Her content mainly revolves around parenting advice, including sleep training. However, I also like her baby gear and toy recommendations for parents who don’t know what to get.

Honest Mum

If there was ever a supermum, Vicki Broadbent was it. The award-winning writer, director, and bestselling author is known for her extensive work in parenting. She’s recognised as a Bored Panda Parenting Expert and reaches an astonishing 124 million people monthly with her article contributions. She’s also appeared on Good Morning Britain, Lorraine, Channel 5, Sky News, and BBC Radio 5 Live

But despite this fame and success, I like how Vicki always returns to basics on her blog. She’s the master of finding the little things that matter in the parenting world and discussing them in a way that benefits mums and dads.

Mixed Up Mama

Fariba Soetan is the blogger behind the Mixed Up Mama blog (at mixedracefamily.com). And she’s another superstar who deserves a special mention in this list.

Fariba’s life story isn’t what you’d expect. She’s of Iranian and British descent, grew up in Canada, and currently lives in London with her three mixed-race daughters aged 11, 9, and 7. (She also has a pet bunny, Barry!)

She and her Nigerian husband Laolu are the perfect team to communicate the challenges of mixed-race family life. Content covers topics relating to diverse identities and empowering families to embrace their journeys through life, wherever they take them.

Not Just Cute

If you feel strongly about early childhood education, check out Not Just Cute, a blog by Amanda Morgan dedicated to implementing effective lessons at home and in the classroom. I think of her as an advocate for young children who don’t have a voice.

Amanda’s core thesis comes from science showing the early years are children’s most formative. She believes in getting pedagogy right before age five for a healthy and successful life.

The content on the site is partially for academics and clinical practitioners. But there’s also space for educated parents who want to learn more about what works.

I like how Amanda doesn’t pull any punches when discussing childhood education. What matters to her more than anything is the truth!

Toddler Approved

Kristina Buskirk is another top-rated parenting blogger worth admiring (yes, we mean it!) She’s the brains behind Toddler Approved, a site dedicated to helping you manage young children (after the cute baby phase).

Hopping onto her site, you’ll find activity plans, learning ideas, and parenting resources. There’s so much content that it’s almost impossible to wade through it all! Get advice on everything from busting your toddler’s boredom to using sensory bins to develop fine motor skills.

The Inspired Treehouse

The Inspired Treehouse, run by co-authors Claire Heffron and Lauren Drobnjak, provides in-depth information on childhood development through play. It also focuses on developing mental resilience through early years, preparing them for life.

I like that the blog’s founders put their expertise to work when offering advice to readers. Claire has a Master of Science in Occupational Therapy from The University of North Carolina while Lauren earned a Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy from Youngstown State.

Elevating Child Care

Janet Landsbury never imagined she’d become one of the world’s foremost parenting bloggers. (Early in her career she was an actress and model). However, everyone’s glad she made the transition.

Her Elevating Child Care blog is the product of her experience as a mother. During the early days, she felt overwhelmed by the experience (as many parents do) but soon discovered Magda Gerber’s philosophy based on the principles of respect. Now she teaches other parents the value of observing and understanding child behaviours instead of imposing constant direction.

What The Redhead Said

Donna Wishart started What The Redhead Said in November 2016 to chronicle moments with her children and her experience as a mum. She talks about Little Pickle (LP) her oldest child, Little Man (LM) her youngest, and her husband Dave, a police sergeant.

What The Redhead Said is a blog for those who feel strongly about home births and co-sleeping. There’s an enormous array of content on topics like baby-led weaning and breastfeeding for those who want to do things naturally.

But, of course, What the Redhead Said wouldn’t be complete without its delicious fudge recipes. Donna isn’t afraid to admit she has a sweet tooth.

Single Mother Survival Guide

If you are looking for a blog that offers guidance when parenting alone, the Single Mother Survival Guide could be it. It’s run by Julia Hasche, a woman who knows what it’s like to run things unaided!

Her message is simple: feeling isolated and overwhelmed is normal but you can find stability and happiness. But Julia isn’t just speaking from the heart. She’s also a CDC Certified Divorce and Recovery Coach, helping single mothers navigate challenging situations. Throughout her content, she helps women rebuild their lives and regain self-esteem. It’s a one-stop shop for anyone struggling.

Notable Mentions

So, there you have it: our top parenting bloggers for August 2024. All of them are worth checking out.

Now, it’s time to look at the up-and-coming bloggers who didn’t make our main list. These people offer a slightly different slant that’s also worth checking out.

Single Dad’s Guide To Life

The Single Dad’s Guide To Life feels similar to the Single Mother Survival Guide. The blog focuses on men’s content to assist with child-rearing, covering everything from outdoor activities with sons to teaching daughters how to resist peer pressure. New content appears nearly every day,

Why we picked it: Simple honest advice for dads looking for help when parenting alone.

New Modern Mom

New Modern Mom is a resource for the “women behind the mothers.” It reminds readers that there’s still everything to live for, despite the pressures of family and child-rearing.

Some see New Modern Mom as a publishing platform for parenting content. But it’s more than that. It’s the outgrowth of a few simple ideas the blog’s creator typed into a Google Doc when she was 29 and finding it hard to raise her first child. Since then, it’s ballooned into something much bigger. (It even has a shop!)

Why we picked it: Compelling content for mothers who want advice on dealing with the chaos of family life.

Regarding Baby

Regarding Baby is the brainchild of Lisa Sunbury, a Resources for Infant Educarers (RIE) influencer. She focuses on early childhood education, providing insights on how mums and dads can better understand their infants and toddlers.

Her theme is getting parents to slow down. Instead of reacting to every situation instinctively, she believes in activating slower thinking pathways, rationalising behaviour, and responding accordingly.

Why we picked it: Helpful content for parents who feel like pulling their hair out because of their kids’ tantrums.

Thrifty Nifty Mommy

Thrifty Nifty Mommy is the creation of Janessa Solem. She focuses on strategies for living an affordable family life (and avoiding debt).

I like how she pays special attention to inexpensive but nutritious family recipes. She’s an expert in slashing food budgets without making too many compromises. (But, of course, she’s partial to a treat from time to time!)

Why we picked it: Ideal for parents wanting to save money on childrearing and keep costs under control.

Mommy Labor Nurse

Are you an expecting mother? If so, Mommy Labor Nurse could be the blog for you. It’s a treasure trove for parents worried about giving birth (and what comes after). Expect plenty of transformative advice, inspiring stories, and content on C-section/natural births.

Why we picked it: Soothing and compassionate advice for expecting mothers.
